Local haunt

Opened in 1876, Central is perhaps the most traditional—and famous—of the Viennese kaffeehauses. It was here that Arthur Schnitzler and Sigmund Freud would take their daily caffeine under the cathedral-like ceiling. Though a full menu is on offer, it is Central's daily excellent selection of tortes and cakes that attract the tourists and local hordes. Sacher torte and apfeltorte (layers of apple encased in a buttery, sugared confection) draw many back for repeat visits.
