There's no gold in this house, as the name would suggest, but the Ca' d'Oro—also known as the Galleria Giorgio Franchetti—is a treasure trove of artwork collected by the eponymous baron, who devoted his life to restoring this 15th-century gothic palazzo on the Grand Canal. There aren't as many billboard works as in some of the other galleries, but the collection—which includes works confiscated from local churches under Napoleon's rule—is an exquisite mix, and the palazzo itself is one of the most beautiful that's open to visit. Franchetti's ashes are buried under the terrace fronting the Grand Canal, whose meticulously restored mosaic flooring mimics that of the basilica of San Marco.
