Vancouver International Film Festival
One of the five largest film festivals in North America, the two-week Vancouver International Film Festival (VIFF) was first founded in 1982. Each year in late September and early October, participating theaters show a wide variety of international cinema, from undiscovered films to recognized successes from other festivals. In 2011, event-goers screened more than 375 films from 75 countries, with an emphasis on Canadian films, East Asian productions, and nonfiction. In addition to screenings, the VIFF features Q&A’s with international filmmakers and critics. The nonprofit organization that runs the festival also presents movies year-round at the Vancity Theatre.
