Upper East Side
Candle Café
between 74th and 75th Sts.
New York, NY, 10021, United States
What started out as a small health food store and juice bar has grown into one of the city’s most popular vegan restaurants. Opened in 1984 on Manhattan’s Upper East Side, this eatery serves organic cuisine directly from the farm to the table using mostly locally grown products. Beneath the dining room's purple ceiling, the natural wood tables are surrounded by brown chairs and purple benches. As the first restaurant in New York City to be certified green by the Green Restaurant Association, the Candle Café operates as eco-friendly as possible while serving up menu options such as Cajun seitan sandwich, Aztec salad and sesame-crusted tofu.
Insider Tip:
The menu is entirely vegan with the exception of one ingredient: soy cheese, which contains casein.
