“Nothing is worth more than this day,” a quote from Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, is one of many poetic phrases hand-engraved on Jeanine Payer’s jewelry. Located just a few floors beneath her workshop in Union Square’s Phelan Building, Payer’s tiny shop showcases unusual, understated pieces such as Alight, a necklace of five hand-hammered silver butterflies with words from Rumi engraved across the largest wing. Payer and her small team of metalsmiths create three collections each year, some of which incorporate miniature gemstones, vintage photographs, and fabric from Liberty of London. Former customers include Julia Roberts, Johnny Depp, and Susan Sarandon.
The shop is about the size of a walk-in closet and is very easy to miss; look for the neighboring Eppler’s Bakery and Aerosoles shoe store.
