The Strand, New York

Located in the East Village, this quirky bookstore is known for its massive selection of used, rare, and out-of-print titles. Originally opened in 1927 on on Fourth Avenue (known as Book Row), the Strand Book Store claims to have 18 miles of both new and used books in its 55,000-square-foot space. The independent store also buys rare and used books, and downstairs in the basement, there is a selection of discounts on review copies of at least 50 percent off.
