In 1980, American media tycoon Richard Evanson turned his private Fijian island into this tiny, luxurious resort. Privacy and escape are the watchwords here; the property is couples-only (except for a half-dozen family weeks each year) and has no pool, no schedule of daily activities, no nightclub. What it does have are 14 bures—traditional wooden thatched-roof cottages—with soaring windows overlooking the turquoise Blue Lagoon (some also have hot tubs, outdoor showers, and private verandas with lounging daybeds built for two). The 14 white-sand beaches can be privately reserved—so you and your companion can have a different one to yourselves each day; there are also boardwalks through the mangroves, sunrise horseback rides, snorkeling and sailing excursions, and a staff that sings its welcome as your plane lands in the lagoon.

Though there’s no spa, every guest here gets a complimentary half-hour lomilomi massage. If you like it, you can book a full-hour, four-handed treatment in your bure.
