An intimate (22 seats only) tempura house in upscale Roppongi Hills, Tempura Mikawa is found behind an unmarked, sliding wooden door set into a full-wall mural of blue birds on a gold background. Inside, there's counter space for ten and a private tatami room with three tables behind a separate mural. The light and non-greasy tempura includes fresh-caught fish, seasonal vegetables, and kakiage (a mixed blend.) Meals are served with sake in artisan-made ceramic cups, and all include azuki beans with jelly for dessert.
While in Roppongi Hills, spend some time in the sprawling gardens and pond, which is home to fish spawned from those brought to outer space by a Japanese astronaut in 1994.
