The neighborhood of Tsukishima, on a man-made island of the same name, is an off-the-beaten-tourist-path destination for local food. It’s no secret with Tokyo residents, though, and they come here for two reasons: monjayaki and okonomiyaki, two styles of pancakes cooked with vegetables and meat. The Osaka-style okonomiyaki are a bit firmer than monjayaki. You cook your own pancakes on a teppanyaki grill at your table, choosing from toppings such as bacon, cheese, green onion, mentaiko (spicy cod roe), cabbage, and tuna. Or just cook veggies, meat, or yakisoba (fried noodles) on the hot iron plate.
