Tsukiji

5-2-1 Tsukiji
Tokyo, 104-0044, Japan
TEL: 81 3 3543-4176

Operating here since 1935, the world’s largest fish market is a sight to be seen and experienced. The jonai (inner market) area for wholesale fish merchants is closed to the general public, but the jogai (outer market) is open to everyone. Restaurants serve fresh-from-the-net sushi and other foods, and shops peddle knives and kitchenware, pickles, produce, dry goods, and hundreds of varieties of seafood. The market is slated to move to Tokyo’s Toyosu neighborhood (in the Koto Ward) in 2012, so come now and taste a piece of history. Shops and eateries open early in the morning (by 7 a.m.) and generally close at 1 or 2 p.m.
