The Southern Pacific Coast
The left point break at Pavones is the country’s most legendary wave—and a pilgrimage site for top surfers from all over the world. Beginners who’d like to learn to hang ten here—and experts who want to improve their game or rent equipment—can get their fix at Pavones Surf School (619-482-9254; www.pavonessurfschool.com). Owner and San Diego native Al Pina takes students out right on the break, which peels evenly to the left and can carry surfers for minutes at a time.
The epicenter of Pavones is the Esquina del Mar Cantina (beachfront; 011-506-844-9454), not known for its haute cuisine, but with fabulous views of the wave and its riders. If you don’t surf, this is the place to kick back, pop a cold Imperial (locally brewed beer), and watch world-class experts show you how it’s done.
