Strasburg Rail Road
Rte. 741, east of Strasburg
Ronks, PA, 17572, United States
Hauled by steam locomotives, this 45-minute train loops through a pastoral strip of Lancaster County, from Strasburg to Leaman Place Junction and back. Working farms, many of them Amish, make up the bulk of the scenery. The train's standard car is a restored Victorian coach heated by a potbelly stove on chilly days and cooled by open windows during warm weather. Higher-priced tickets can be purchased to ride in one of six theme cars, such as the President's, a replica of Reading Car 10 built in 1913 to transport the railroad's top executives, which is outfitted with over-stuffed furniture and carved woodwork.
Insider Tip:
Disembark at Groff's Grove, located about halfway along the route, to enjoy a picnic brought from home or purchased at the rail road, then hop a later train back to the station.
