Vietnam Veterans Memorial
Washington, DC, United States
Located on the National Mall between the Washington Monument and Lincoln Memorial, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial is dedicated to the American men and women who served in the Vietnam War. Often referred to as “the Wall,” the memorial was founded by Vietnam veteran Jan Scruggs and designed by Yale University student Maya Ying Lin. Completed in 1984, the Wall consists of two polished, black-granite panels inscribed with more than 58,000 veterans’ names. The memorial also contains a bronze sculpture entitled Three Servicemen and a Vietnam Women’s Memorial, which includes a second sculpture of three women surrounding a wounded soldier.
Insider Tip:
Follow your visit with a trip to the National Museum of American History, which houses a collection of items left at the Wall, including photographs and wedding rings.
