World War II Memorial
The World War II Memorial was dedicated on May 29, 2004 and commemorates the service and sacrifice of Americans in the war. The memorial sits on the National Mall between the Lincoln Memorial and the Washington Monument. Designed by Friedrich St. Florian, the memorial features two arches representing the Atlantic and Pacific theaters and 56 pillars representing the 48 states in the union in 1945, as well as various territories and commonwealths, such as Hawaii and Puerto Rico. The Freedom Wall is covered in gold stars, each representing 100 American deaths in the war.
