The Lake Como Area

Restaurants in The Lake Como Area

Like the country they call home, restaurants in Lake Como feature some of the world’s most renowned gastronomic traditions. And, whether they’re lakeside or centered on the village square, Lake Como restaurants offer ambiance in spades.

Il Gatto Nero is situated in the hills above Cernobbio. Here, patrons can take in lake views in a romantic, white tablecloth-clad setting. The restaurant is a favorite of celebs like George Clooney and Liam Gallager, as is La Locanda dell’Isola in Como proper. The eatery has been operating since 1947 and is one of the oldest in the area.

Some of the best restaurants in Lake Como source their ingredients from their immediate surroundings. The family behind Albergo Ristorante Silvio in Bellagio has passed down the rights to fish on Lake Como for generations and is one of only a few with that privilege. These catches of the day are the foundation of the restaurant’s seafood-centric menu.

Other Lake Como restaurants serving outstanding Italian fare include La Contrada in Varenna, which serves up dishes such as ravioli and mozzarella mouse, along with an opportunity for al fresco terrace dining.

Every morning owner Cristian Ponzini sails out on Como to catch lavarello and other native fish to serve at his glass-walled restaurant. Ponzini is one of the few who have fishing rights on the lake—a privilege that has been passed down through his family for generations.

Set in a centuries-old botanical garden, La Contrada serves regional specialties such as vegetable ravioli with dried-tomato gremolata and mozzarella mousse on a terrace overlooking the lake.
