This grand Italianate manor was home to three Dukes, an Earl, a Prince of Wales, and the Viscounts Astor—and hosted Queen Victoria and Charlie Chaplin—before its swimming pool landed it a key role in the Profumo affair which brought down the British government in the 1960s. It’s also gorgeous: impressive National Trust gardens encircle the property and slope down to the Thames; a striking John Singer Sargent portrait of former resident Lady Astor hangs in the Great Hall, alongside a 16th century Burgundian fireplace, 17th-century French tapestries, and imposing suits of armor from 1525.
