Cliveden House

Cliveden, England, SL6 0JF, United Kingdom
TEL: 44-1628-668-561
This grand Italianate manor was home to three Dukes, an Earl, a Prince of Wales, and the Viscounts Astor—and hosted Queen Victoria and Charlie Chaplin—before its swimming pool landed it a key role in the Profumo affair which brought down the British government in the 1960s. It’s also gorgeous: impressive National Trust gardens encircle the property and slope down to the Thames; a striking John Singer Sargent portrait of former resident Lady Astor hangs in the Great Hall, alongside a 16th century Burgundian fireplace, 17th-century French tapestries, and imposing suits of armor from 1525. Ornately carved paneling, gilt mirrors, and frescoes feel opulent without being overbearing. Some rooms have handcrafted beds; others look onto the Berkshire hills.

Room to Book:

Chaplin for its sunken circular tub; Lord Astor for its views of the shell-shaped Fountain of Love, graced by Carrara marble cupids.

Insider Tip:

Explore the property’s follies and 376 acres of historic gardens, including fanciful topiary, a maze designed by former owner William Waldorf Astor, and a lakefront Chinese pagoda.
