The period between 1940 and 1991, when hopes for independence were quashed and the country shifted hands from the Soviets to the Nazis and back again, is particularly troubling for Estonians. The era is brought into high relief through artful audiovisual installations of political speeches and protests, artifacts such as suitcases symbolizing the flight of 70,000 people, and grim photographs of Siberian and Russian gulags.
