The Malaya

39 Lime St.
Sydney, New South Wales, 2000, Australia
TEL: 61-2-9279-1170

A mainstay on the local dining scene, this Southeast Asian restaurant was first established in the 1960’s by Hong Kong immigrant Wong Tai See. Situated directly on the waterfront in King Street Wharf, the restaurant contains a bustling open kitchen and floor-to-ceiling windows framing panoramic views of Darling Harbour. Using imported spices, the chefs prepare signature dishes like coconut beef rendang (a slow-cooked Indonesian curry dish) and king prawn laksa (rice vermicelli with bean sprouts and fresh prawns in a spicy milk soup). The restaurant also serves Asian-inspired cocktails like the Malaytini, with crushed lychee, passion fruit, and Belvedere vodka.

Insider Tip:

Call ahead to reserve a window seat—in addition to providing the best views of the water, those tables are also furthest from the noisy kitchen.
