The Vasamuseet, located on Djurgarden, is the most popular museum in Sweden. It houses the Vasa, the oldest known completed ship, built in 1628 during the reign of King Gustavus Adolphus II. The three-story high warship, with two gun decks, 64 cannons, and 700 ornate sculptures, sank after sailing 1,400 yards and was not brought to surface until 1961. Other museum features include a recreated gun deck and exhibitions about the ship's restoration, life in Stockholm in the 1600's, and life onboard a warship. Another exhibit uses forensic science to provide information about the 15 skeletons found near the ship.
