Society for Swedish Handicrafts

44 Sveavägen
Stockholm, 111 34, Sweden
TEL: 46-8-232-115

The spare storefront and neon sign on Sveavagen don't hint at the gifts and pieces of art to be found in the Society for Swedish Handicrafts (Svensk Hemslojd). Founded in 1899 by Lilli Zick Letterman in order to keep small-scale folk art strong, the cooperative is packed full with handmade crafts from Swedish artists: pottery, glassworks, jewelry, textiles, yarn, and wood and metal crafts. Recent offerings include brass Saint Lucia crowns that hold seven candles, Klassbols' red and white cloths in checked, striped, or star-patterned designs, and bracelets of dyed leather, beads, and pewter strands from Sami artists.
