This 19th-century behemoth, one in a series of palatial Baroque and Neoclassical buildings—and actual palaces—lining the city’s famed main thoroughfare, reopened in 2009 after a $135 million refurbishment. A top hat and tails wouldn’t be out of place in the Art Deco–style lobby, with its sleek black-marble floors, waterfall chandeliers, and multistory columns. The aura of modern luxury attracts an upscale business clientele, who feel at home amid the staid palettes of chocolates and taupes and the streamlined furniture of the 388 rooms.
