Proper English charm may be unexpected in St. Louis, but the Cheshire delivers it in spades. It’s the property’s history that gives it such a strong British sensibility: the original owner modeled the hotel after a London cheese shop, furnishing the wood-beamed spaces—each named for a well-known British author, poet, or playwright—with vintage artwork and stained-glass windows. Downstairs, the hotel’s Fox and Hounds Tavern serves scotch and Irish-made whiskey and traditional bangers and mash, but just step outside and you’re squarely in St. Louis, within walking distance of Forest Park, one of the country’s largest public green spaces.
