Founded in 1882, the estate mansion of Spottswoode has been featured on the label of each vintage, even though wine wasn’t produced until 100 years later. Now owned by Mary Novak and her two daughters, the winery produces limited quantities, most notably a highly allocated cabernet sauvignon. Guests can only make reservations for parties of 10 or less on Tuesdays and Fridays, which results in a more intimate tour of the famed mansion, Victorian farmhouse, pre-prohibition cellar, and neighboring winery. This is followed by a tasting of current releases next to the estate swimming pool or small tasting room, depending on weather.
Insider Tip:
The winery utilizes a modern technique to age their cabernet sauvignon, via three large egg-shaped concrete shells, imported from France, which the winery has named Huey, Duey, and Luey.
