Sintra
Ritz-Carlton–run Penha Longa Hotel & Golf Resort
Linhó, 2714-511, Portugal
The palazzo-style buildings of the Penha Longa Hotel and Golf resort overlook the lakes, forests, and mountains of Sintra. The monastery, built in 1355, now houses conference rooms and the 19th century palace with full-service spa treatment rooms and adorned with gazebos, waterfalls, and pools. In contrast to the rosette-colored exterior, the 194 rooms are done in subdued earth tones of yellow, ochre, and cream and furnished with dark wood furniture. The two golf courses were designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr. and include views of the sea and mountains; other activities include horseback riding, tennis, and hiking.
