With a glut of restaurants listed in Asia’s 50 Best, and hordes of hole-in-the wall eateries slinging local delicacies, this city covers the spectrum from international to local fare and fine dining to street-side snacks.
On the international end of the spectrum, Ultraviolet might be the ultimate dining experience, with a 20-course menu that’ll cost you a cool $600. For a more affordable but still excellent meal, go to famed British chef Jason Atherton’s restaurants Table No. 1 or the Commune Social.
The local cuisine tends to be sweet and oily, noted for its freshness, bright colors, and original flavors. “Shanghai” means “above the sea,” and fittingly, the locals love to eat seafood, especially freshwater fishes, steamed shellfish, stir fried shellfish, and crabs. When it comes to meat, the Shanghainese demonstrate a strong preference for pork, served in a variety of ways at the best restaurants in Shanghai, though chicken, duck, and tofu are also common. Traditional preparations emphasize sweet and sour rather than spicy flavors. For local cuisine, options range from the high-end Fu1015 and Family Li Imperial Cuisine, which traces its roots back to the Qing Dynasty, to the affordable Old Jesse, which serves some of the most authentic Shanghainese food in the city. Shanghai restaurants also serve plenty of organic vegetables. Vegetarians will love Fu He Hui and WUJIE.
