Shanghai
Mansion Hotel
Hidden among the skyscrapers of Shanghai, you’ll find the Mansion Hotel, a handsome low-lying building in the city’s tony French Concession, near chic cafés and boutiques. Interiors harken back to the 1930s, when French architect Lafayette designed the Art Deco landmark for a notorious mob boss. Remington typewriters, antique telephones, and a 1910 Columbia gramophone pepper the lobby. Upstairs, however, the hotel’s 30 rooms have modern amenities—marble bathrooms; whirlpool tubs; plush, king-sized beds—that were added during a 2007 top-to-bottom renovation.
Room to Book:
Rooms are large, so unless you’re traveling with family, a suite is unnecessary. Book a room with a garden view to buffer the noise from the city streets below.
Insider Tip:
An Italian restaurant on the hotel’s fifth floor rooftop is a local favorite, thanks to expansive views of the French Concession.
