Hotel Pravo
Shanghai, China
Hotel Overview In an effort to capture the style and spirited indulgence that personified Shanghai in the early 20th century, architect Tong Yi Qing incorporated sunburst motifs over the Pravo’s 15-story Art Deco exterior. In the lobby, Qing turned to artist Xia Xiao Wan to create a sense of natural serenity with dramatic, floor-to-ceiling installations of flowering tree branches set against white stones. The 86 suites are divided into seven distinct styles, with the Superior Suites occupying corner spaces to afford views of the Bund, while the Deluxe versions feature warm, green color schemes and baths located in the center of the rooms. Onsite dining includes Yu Yuan’s restaurant, where artist Guo Fang Jiang’s contemporary landscapes serve as conversation pieces while guests dine on Northern Chinese fare, as well as the more Westernized Mare, where fresh fish and seafood are served from a centralized food station.
Room to Book:
Romantic views of the Huangpu River and the Pudong district’s gleaming skyline can be enjoyed without leaving the bed of suite 1101. Adding to the allure is the silvery translucent ceiling-to-floor curtain encircling the bed.
Insider Tip:
Tips Head Chef Bao Chun Jiang’s career in both Taiwan and Shanghai is reflected in Yu-Yu-an’s menu. Order stewed chicken with three cups sauce and pan-fried codfish with black bean sauce to savor the differences.
