Seattle was built in strange ways, leveling hills in one section of the city and building on landfill in others. So in the 19th century, when the Pioneer Square area was raised by an entire story to escape flooding, the one-time street level became basements, with doors opening into buried streets. The Underground Tour peeks at some of these historic treasures underfoot, where hidden and forgotten rooms became opium dens—as well as sites for gambling and prostitution. One enterprising history buff started the tours in the 1960s, and today they've grown to include select adults-only treks that get especially explicit about the provocative underbelly of the city.
