In an era where physical book-buying seems to be on the wane—thanks to Seattle company Amazon, of course—this hometown independent bookstore is going strong. In fact, when Elliott Bay moved from its original Pioneer Square location to buzzy Capitol Hill, the family-owned book store grew and became even more of a local staple. The space is crossed by wooden beams above, with comfortable leather chairs and tables of staff favorites below. Readings are commonly held in a beautiful space downtstairs—both local and international authors are well-represented—and the cafe serves excellent sandwiches, pastries, beer, and wine.
