This handsome mansion was built by British architect William Jay, and is one of the finest works of the Regency Neoclassical style in the United States. Built for former governor Alexander Telfair, the house has been a museum since 1875, when Telfair’s sister Mary bequeathed it to the city. Some rooms are arranged to show what life was like for the affluent family in the mid 19th century, while the galleries house huge, striking works, including wonderful examples of major works of American Impressionism and Ashcan School realism.
