Map
18/32 Via della Pergola, Florence, Tuscany 50121

Billed as the oldest opera house in Italy, the Teatro della Pergola was built in 1656 as a private theatre for the Grand Dukes of Tuscany. Over the years, the theatre hosted the first Mozartian operas in Italy, as well as premiers by such renowned composers as Giuseppe Verdi and Gaetano Donizetti. Today, the renovated theatre contains two auditoriums designed with marble columns, crystal chandeliers, gold inlay, and tiered, red velvet seats. Every year, the theatre hosts more than 200 productions ranging from Shakespearean plays to chamber music concerts and performances by the Orchestra da Camera Fiorentina.
