HB Antiques

1016/18 Defensa
Buenos Aires, Argentina
TEL: 54 11 4361-3325

As Recoleta mansions were carved into progressively smaller apartments after World War II, the city found itself awash in Art Deco furniture sold by rich Porteños who’d seen their fortunes slide. Luckily, many of the pieces—in the style of Art Deco masters like Ruhlmann, Frank, and Leleu—made their way to Hugo Breitman’s HB Antiques. Opened by his father in 1960, the store is now located a block from San Telmo’s Plaza Dorrego in a cavernous building dominated by a huge $70,000 bohemian-crystal chandelier from the late 1800s. Art Deco items include a pair of 1930s French mirrored half-moon console tables ($1,800) and a Ruhlmann-style rosewood and ivory desk ($5,500).

Insider Tip: This stretch of Defensa features other Art Deco–filled stores, including the well-stocked Guevara Gallery (Defensa 982; 54-11/4362-7718).
