There is a robust appreciation for food here, be it a humble taco from a nighttime street stand to a puree, reduction, or infusion swirled over roast duck; or a red chili pepper stuffed with chocolate truffle. Chefs from Mexico City and abroad come here to work on fish flown in from the coast or wild mushrooms just harvested in the mountains after the rain. Young chefs quit their jobs to open up something small, like the gourmet AguaMiel, or more humble Victoria’s Cafe. Today, San Miguel is home to more than 350 restaurants and more are planned for the near future. Take a walk through San Miguel Market to learn about the produce of the region, and then dig in at some of the city’s best restaurants. T+L’s travel guide will tell you the best places to eat in San Miguel de Allende.

There’s cuisine both high and low, and everything in between: South American, Asian, European, fusion. Mostly, of course, there’s Mexican: enchiladas, gorditas, sopes, tacos, and salsas. It’s not just a beef, chicken, and pork world, either: there’s nopal cactus, purslane, squash, beans, corn, dragon fruit, and locally grown “foreign” items like asparagus and artichoke. There’s boutique chocolate from a farm in Veracruz at Mente de Cacao, wakame and hijiki seaweed salads at the Japanese home-style deli Delica Mitsu, and local artisan goat cheese at Luna de Queso. Enrique Olvera is one of the most acclaimed chefs in Mexico, and you can see why at Moxi at Hotel Matilda. The menu emphasizes inventive dishes—such as braised lamb with serrano peppers and chickpea puree, or squash stars with sweet corn, red pipian and hazelnuts—made with fresh, locally sourced ingredients.

Any movable feast bucket list should include pozole at La Aborada, the tasting menu at Aperi, breakfast at Posada Corazón, imaginative tacos and soups at Don Taco Tequila, brunch at Nirvana, comida with views at Cumpanio, farm-to-table cuisine at De Temporada, and a sandwich, croissant or pizza slice at Mesa Grande.
