At first glance, the abandoned shell of an 1800s mining town nestled deep in the San Juan Mountains of the Colorado Rockies seems less like a travel destination than a page out of history. But the buildings have recently been lovingly restored into a rustic-luxe retreat that delivers more than access to the region’s famous hot springs. Luxurious rough-hewn cabins with mountain views are set deep within the wilderness, while outdoor activities such as horseback riding and fly-fishing keep guests returning to the homespun American West year after year. Diners will love the ever-changing seasonal menu, always based on what’s fresh at the farmers’ market; hearty meals may include smoked boar tenderloin served with a tomato chutney and sweet corn purée. But the main draw here is the wonder of the natural hot springs, and the property offers six different ways to take a dip—from a seat at the restored 19th-century bathhouse to a place under the stars at the original water source.
