Inside an Art Deco building on Potrero Hill, Anchor Brewing Company is one of the oldest independent breweries in the nation, dating back to 1896. Every weekday, professional brewers lead two free tours of the facility, available by reservation only. The tour covers three floors of the building, including the traditional brew house filled with vintage mash tuns and copper brew kettles. The tour ends in the tasting room, which contains antique beer posters, floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the city, and a small bar serving samples of six different selections, including the flagship Anchor Steam and all-natural Liberty Ale.
The tours are often fully booked up to three months in advance, so make sure to call ahead of time, especially if you prefer the afternoon time slot.
