Ballast Point
Ste. B
San Diego, CA, 92131, United States
One of San Diego’s breakout breweries sprouted from a home brew supply shop called Home Brew Mart, and now occupies a Scripps Ranch warehouse due east of the original location. Founder Jack White and head brewer Yuseff Cherney opted for a nautical theme, complete with beers like Sculpin IPA, Black Marlin Porter, and Calico Amber, all named for local fish. Even the beer labels, designed by local artist Paul Elder, reflect the oceanic theme. Ballast Point’s tasting room, which is open daily, features a blackboard menu and tables made from sawed beer barrels. Cherney even distills spirits, including gin, rum, and whiskey.
Insider Tip:
Ballast Point still operates the Home Brew Mart on Linda Vista Road, producing and pouring more experimental beers, and yes, selling home brew supplies.
