Quintessa
Rutherford, CA, 94573, United States
One of the last parcels of land in the Rutherford area to be utilized for grape growing, this 280-acre property was purchased by famous Chilean winemakers Agustin and Valeria Huneeus in 1989. The name comes from the five hills and five separate microclimates on the property. Sustainable and biodynamic, Quintessa produces on Bordeaux varietals, including blocks dedicated to Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc, Carmenere, Merlot, and Cabernet Sauvignon. The facility itself–a crescent-shaped structure inconspicuously built into the rustic hillside–is fitted with natural stone and wood, an indoor fireplace, and skylights throughout. Guests can visit by appointment only, and guided tours of the winery and surrounding vineyards conclude with private tastings.
Insider Tip:
Guided tours include stops by the estate's impressive, 17,000-square-foot cave system, where wine ages in oak barrels for three years under perfect cellerage conditions.
