Rosemont
Madre
Peruvian-born chef and owner of Laurier-West restaurant Raza, Mario Navarrete Jr. opened Madre, his second restaurant, in 2007. The chef, from the glass-walled kitchen, combines French techniques, Peruvian dishes, and his mother’s love of cooking into dishes like the shrimp speared with sugar cane, and Cornish hen with chipotles. More classic, home-style options include the cinnamon pumpkin soup, cod ceviche, or sweet potato bread pudding topped with caramel. The compact tables and paintings of the chef's family fill the narrow dining room at this Rosemont restaurant. Besides a wine list, a BYO-policy is followed.
Insider Tip:
Pick up a bottle of South American wine at the SAQ, the government-run wine shop four blocks south of Madre on Masson Street.
