Best Time To Go
July and August tend to be very hot with no respite, so the best time to go is spring (March-May) and fall (September-November), when the weather is warm and pleasant.
Rome’s public transportation network ATAC only has two Metro lines, but there are ample buses and trams. A single ATAC ticket costs $1.70 and lasts for 100 minutes. A 24-hour pass costs $7.89. Taxis are also easily accessible at designated taxi stands (they cannot be hailed), and the city is also quite walkable.
January is the coolest month, with an average temperature of 46°F (8°C). July is the hottest month, with an average temperature of 78°F (26°C).
Know Before You Go
The city observes all Italian public holidays, as well as two Rome-specific holidays: April 21 and June 29. Most businesses close on holidays and during the month of August. Restaurant hours are generally noon through 2:30 p.m. for lunch, and 7 until 11:30 p.m. for dinner. Tips cannot be added to the restaurant bill and should not be excessive—10% is average.
