Rome
Palazzo Manfredi
Next to the Colosseum lie the remains of the ancient gladiators’ barracks and training grounds. Rising above them is the dusty pink 17th-century Palazzo Manfredi, converted in 2002 into a hotel with one of the most sought after views in all of Rome: a panorama that stretches from the Colosseum across the Forums to the garden-covered Oppian Hill atop the ruins of Nero’s Golden Palace. The Hotel Gladiatori has just 16 rooms, fitted out by Renata Finlani in a classic style tinged with modern luxuries—mixing wood and marble with contemporary art, antiques with modern design furnishings, beamed ceilings with Bang & Olufsen home theaters. Chef Giuseppe di Lorio presides over the Italian cuisine in the 5 Star Diamond Award–winning Aroma restaurant on the rooftop terrace.
Room to Book:
Any room at Queen Deluxe or above has those priceless views over the Colosseum (Prestige rooms overlook the gardens of the Colle Oppio across the street).Insider Tip:
The hotel lavishes care on each guest. Need a loaner laptop to use the Wi-Fi? No problem. Need an in-room massage? The concierge can arrange it. Need to borrow a Lamborghini? They have one on hand for rent. The palazzo also rents five gorgeous apartments, penthouses, and lofts, where you can live like a count (after all, the Conte Manfredi still owns the place), but with all the services of a hotel.
