A complex of museums and galleries founded by popes Clement XIV and Pius VI, the Vatican Museums contain a wealth of historical items and artistic works in the form of archeological findings, sculptures, mosaics, statue, and frescoes. Here guests can marvel at Michelangelo’s beloved Sistine Chapel, the works of Raphael, Van Gogh, Giotto, and Caravaggio, to name a few. The complex includes a courtyard, numerous art galleries, the apartments of previous popes, and regionally themed museums, such as the Etruscan and Egyptian sections. Guided tours like “Art and Faith,” “Art and Music” and the Family Tour are available, as well as tours for the deaf and blind.

Insider Tip:

The Vatican Museums are free on the last Sunday of each month—though every local resident and school group takes advantage of this fact. Arrive before opening time to keep ahead of the crowds.
