Robben Island
Robben Island Museum
Cape Town, 08002, South Africa
Best known as the former prison where Nelson Mandela was incarcerated for 18 years, this island off the coast of Cape Town also served as a leper colony, mental institution, and military base over the past three centuries. Today, the on-site museum organizes daily tours of the island that begin with a 30-minute catamaran ride from the Nelson Mandela Gateway. Led by an ex-political prisoner, the 2½-hour tour comprises a visit to the prison, including Mandela’s cell, and a 45-minute guided bus excursion, which provides views of the lepers’ church, warden’s village, lime quarry, and wildlife such as African penguins.
Insider Tip:
Sunlight shining off the lime quarry damaged the eyes of many inmates, including Nelson Mandela; make sure to bring sunglasses to protect your own.
