A true gem for serious furniture collectors, Mercado Moderno sells collectible pieces by Brazilian and international designers from the 1950s through 1980s. The prices aren't cheap: a Sergio Rodrigues chaise lounge will set you back R$6,500, while a decorative coffee grinder goes for R$500. But, while the exchange rate is favorable for dollar-holders, it might be worthwhile to stock up here. Especially since many of the pieces are by Brazilian design stars like Rodrigues and Oscar Niemeyer, and destined to rise in value. The layout here is more art gallery than flea market, which makes it especially appealing for the interior designers that frequent the shop.
