At first glance, the abandoned shell of an 1800s mining town nestled deep in the San Juan Mountains of the Colorado Rockies seems less like a travel destination than a page out of history.
Latigo is known for its fine riding program, individualized attention, and "nouveau ranch" menu. The Arapaho National Forest surrounds it on three sides, and trails take you through an array of aspen groves, pine forest, sagebrush, and open meadows.
The ranch’s authentic western look owes much to its working history, but there are also updated luxury touches like a hot tub, feather beds, and hand-crafted soaps. American antiques and hand-made quilts decorate the rooms, and the buildings boast original, log cabin-style walls.
The Asian plains may be thousands of miles away, but that’s no hindrance to spending some time in a yurt at this year-round Rocky Mountain retreat.
