It doesn’t get more historic than this nearly 500-year-old hotel in the heart of prosciutto and Parmigiano country. The Posta is one of Italy’s oldest inns, built in the 13th century as a town hall and converted to lodgings in 1515, and it occupies a prime spot next to the cathedral and one of the twin central squares of this provincial city. While the exterior is full-bore medieval—from Gothic mullioned windows to swallowtail battlements along the roof—the public spaces inside have been redone in an elegant Liberty style (Italy’s Art Nouveau). The 38 rooms vary in feel and décor, though floral-print fabrics dominate, and the overall effect is of an old-fashioned, mid-20th-century hotel with top-notch service.

Insider Tip:

The hotel offers free bikes for wheeling around the historic center; it will also arrange tours to the nearby producers of Parmigiano-Reggiano and balsamic vinegar that put this region on the world culinary map.
