Even before Myanmar’s recent political thaw, this Orient-Express-run retreat in the leafy embassy district stood out as the former capital’s most charming property. A gong is struck upon the arrival of new guests, who are led by lungi-clad staff across a wooden walkway to the 1920s mansion at the heart of the 1.5-acre property. The 48 rooms are done up in plush Asian colonial style, with silk cushions, teak floors, and framed handwoven textiles. Fuel up on a breakfast of tropical fruit, fresh ginger tea, and mohingna, a local specialty of rice noodles and fish soup, before tackling the hot, dusty streets of Yangon. After a day out and about, there’s no more welcome sight than the hotel’s red parasol-lined pool.

Room to Book:

Upgraded in 2007, the two Governor’s rooms—Nos. 111 and 112—have views of the pool and gardens.

Insider Tip:

Ask the concierge about the Elephant Coach city tour in a refurbished 1936 Chevrolet van.
