Quepos
Makanda by the Sea
Built into a hillside on 12 acres of tropical jungle, this adults-only resort is situated approximately halfway between Quepos and Manuel Antonio National Park. Overlooking 60 miles of Pacific coastline, the 11 villas and studios are individually decorated with tiled floors, teak furniture, canopy beds, and full kitchenettes. Private terraces include hammocks and wicker chairs, and are frequented by a variety of local wildlife, including sloths, iguanas, and white-faced capuchin monkeys. The staff delivers a personalized breakfast to the rooms each morning, while lunch and dinner are served at the open-air Sunspot Bar & Grill, positioned beside the infinity pool.
Room to Book:
Of the less expensive studios, No. 3 has the largest terrace.
Insider Tip:
The 20-minute hike to the resort’s private beach is fairly strenuous; if this is an issue, consider taking the free 10 a.m. shuttle instead. The shuttle service is one-way only, however, so you’ll need to take a taxi back.
