Map
1/132 Strahovské Nádvori, Prague,

Built as a Romanesque basilica in 1143, the Strahov Monastery sits about a mile from Prague Castle and is home to a Roman Catholic order of monks called the Premonstratensians. The basilica church contains noteworthy 18th-century frescoes, but the monastery is best known for its library of approximately 200,000 rare books and manuscripts. Many of the volumes are housed in the Philosophical and Theological halls, both of which contain original frescoes. The monastery also has an on-site brewery; a cabinet of curiosities, which includes the remains of a dodo bird; and a scenic overlook offering panoramic views of the city.
