Alibi Restaurant and Lounge
This establishment in north Portland has been operating in one form or another for over eight decades. Larry and Carla White have been in charge for more than 25 years, building on the prior owner’s commitment to tiki. The space sports enough neon signage to qualify for admission to the Las Vegas Strip, and the interior contains several odes to the tropics, including hula dancers on the walls and faux palm trees. The menu has Hawaiian specialties like Kalua pork, marinated beef short ribs, and ginger-kicked chicken, plus a panoply of tropical rum drinks. The 21-and-over establishment has nightly karaoke in the back lounge after 9:30 p.m.
To continue the tropical neon tour, drive two blocks south to The Palms Motor Hotel, which opened in 1954 and sports a sign with glowing palm trees and a branch-bound monkey.
