Founded in 1997 by Walter Jaffe and Paul King, White Bird is a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting local dance companies while also bringing national and international groups to perform in Portland. Each year, the organization presents 12 works ranging from commissioned pieces by Portland choreographers to performances by nationally known companies, such as the Martha Graham Dance Company and Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. Performances from the White Bird Dance series are given at the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall or Newmark Theatre in downtown Portland, while works from the more innovative Uncaged series are shown at the intimate Lincoln Hall at Portland State University.
